Episode #1012 - In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex

Join me and my guest, Dr. Steve Gable as we discuss In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whale ship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick. The experience of the whaling ship, Essex, was the model of Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Join us for a Nantucket boiled dinner and much more on Dinner and a Book.

The whaling ship, Essex, was an American whale ship from Nantucket, Massachusetts. She was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale in the Pacific Ocean in 1820, 2,000 nautical miles off the west coast of South America. The 21 sailors set out in three smaller whaleboats with inadequate food supplies and fresh water. The incident was an inspiration for Herman Melville's 1852 classic novel, Moby Dick. Let's find out how this event happened with my guest Dr. Steve Gable as we prepare a Nantucket boiled dinner with baked beans, brown bread, and topped off with a gin and tonic.
