Episode #712 - The Kite Runner

To find out how a kite runner gets his name, join me and my guest, South Bend Tribune food writer Mike Petrucelli as we discuss Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner while preparing food from Afghanistan.

Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner is a run away best seller... a marvelous first novel and a story of 2 boys who are friends in Afghanistan. They're from different social classes and backgrounds. One is the servant of the other. It is an eloquent story about the fragile relationship between fathers and sons, humans and gods, men and their countries. Pride and honor are foremost. The plot, arising from Amir's close friendship with Hassan, the son of his father's servant, is the thread that ties the book together. The author's depiction of pre-revolutionary Afghanistan, before the Russians invade in the 1970's, is full of haunting images which are symbolized by the kites the boys fly together.

And now let's meet my guest, South Bend Tribune food writer, Mike Petrucellli, as we prepare Shorwa, Afghan chicken, Bonnjan salat and Nan.
