In 1910 Russian Count Leo Tolstoy, the most famous writer in the world, is caught in the struggle between his devoted wife, Sofya, and an equally devoted acolyte, Vladimir Chertkov over Tolstoy's legacy. Sofya fears that she and the children will lose all to the Tolstoyan movement led by Chertkov.
