    We are always in search of programs and initiatives in the name of education that are best practices and able to be replicated and adapted. This week on Education Counts we feature Goodwill's 2nd Chance at Work program, a local program for adults that is helping bridge the gap between unemployed and gainfully employed. Purdue Polytechnic High School South Bend is giving students hands-on learning and skills through STEM projects and curriculum. HerMichiana spotlights education, training and resources that are available to women in need. The Lilly Endowment is helping preserve youth programs at risk of shuttering during the pandemic by supplying funding so the programs can make the impact they were designed for.

The Applied Internship Program is a South Bend-Elkhart program teaching students about start-ups and entrepreneurship. The Merry Lea Summer session through Goshen College connects students to nature and gives teachers the tools the bring nature into their classrooms. The University of Notre Dame teaches equity in the workplace making the environment welcoming, fair and impartial.

Racism isn’t an easy topic to talk to a child about however racism is taught. Just like you can teach a child to be racist, you can also teach them against it. In order for society to function at its best, it has to free itself of prejudices for different races and that means starting the teaching of acceptance and inclusiveness of other races at their most vulnerable mind state.

Future teachers at Indiana University South Bend learn at Prairie winds Nature Farm how to take the class outside the classroom and engage with nature. The Junior Indiana Master Naturalist Course helps homeschool students appreciate history and the great outdoors. Smaller kids get hands on nature in a pond study at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. The Wild School at Luna Hill Farm lets students figure out solutions using raw materials found in nature. We also highlight online and on air educational resources for distance learning available for parents, students and teachers.

    Education Counts Michiana looks for programs and initiatives in the region that reaches learners from preschool through retirement. We found a Junior Chefs program at Jackson Middle School that is teaching students how to cook nutritional meals for their families. This grassroots program helps ease the burden on families by providing knowledge, safety skills and food for those in need. We attended a Superintendent Forum in Elkhart County that shared best practices from all the schools in the district. Fired Up! is an after-school program at Water Street Glassworks in Benton Harbor. At risk students learn to work with glass in this two year program. Michigan City is home to Imagination Station, a preschool that puts into practice the impact that quality early childhood education can provide.
