In Extraordinary Times There Are No Ordinary Lives
This is the theme of Ken Burns' epic "The War" which premieres in September. We couldn't agree more, and as Michiana's Public Television station, we are working hard to tell the stories of those extraordinary times and extraordinary lives that touch us here at home, from around the world where the war was fought and from across time as the Greatest Generation passes their memories on to us.
To date, we have taped a wide variety of World War II experiences, including Michiana soldiers who fought at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and Okinawa; fighter pilots, blimp pilots and bomber gunners; prisoners of war, a conscientious objector, a sailor on board the USS Yorktown; paratroopers, war brides and a woman who made self-sealing fuel cells at Ball-Band.
Without exception, each of them is self-effacing, matter of fact and dignified, with devotion to duty, clarity of mission and unity of purpose that is without parallel in the American experience. We are grateful for their sacrifices during the war and we are thankful for their willingness to share those experiences now.
And yet, we know there are many more stories from Michiana's experience in WW II. We hope you will take the opportunity to share your story with us as well using the link below so that each of the extraordinary stories from Michiana can be acknowledged and honored.
