      Reading proficiency is such a part of learning. This week Education Counts highlights literacy. We start by looking at a program that instills the love of reading called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. La Casa de Amistad is working to keep students reading at home and engaged in learning. Berrien RESA has a literacy coaching program for students in Berrien County. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is helping families build personal libraries without the barrier of cost.

We learned with a group of Grissom Middle School students about leadership through a program called Five Star Fridays. Warsaw schools is teaching the whole child and addressing social and emotional as well as academic learning. South Bend Community School Corporation establish responsive classrooms to bridge the gap between academics and SEL.       This week we created a themed episode featuring how nature is being used to teach. Future teachers at Indiana University South Bend learn at Prairie winds Nature Farm how to take the class outside the classroom and engage with nature. The Junior Indiana Master Naturalist Course helps homeschool students appreciate history and the great outdoors. Smaller kids get hands on nature in a pond study at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. The Wild School at Luna Hill Farm lets students figure out solutions using raw materials found in nature. We also highlight online and on air educational resources for distance learning available for parents, students and teachers.

Students at Grissom Middle School are learning about leadership and social-emotional skills through Five Star Fridays. Science is front and center for competition in Berrien County at the Science Olympiad. High School students in Goshen are getting hands-on training at the manufacturing academy. The South Bend Civic is partnering with the greater community to produce 10 years' worth of August Wilson plays on stage and off in the name of African American education. The School of American Music in Three Oaks is teaching students the value of performing live music. Junior Chefs South Bend is a program that teaches Jackson Middle School students nutrition and science behind cooking for those in need. The Waypoint VRcade is making virtual reality a safe place for those with barriers.

She then came up with the idea to host virtual choir concerts for students at Menominee and Webster elementary schools. With the help of parents, she was then able to capture and create a collage of videos highlighting all participating students, as they sang and danced, virtually. In uncertain times, creativity is the only way, to keep things moving forward.

      Being chosen as Youth of The Year is one of the highest honors that a member could receive at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor. In order to be acknowledged members must embody the characteristics of a leader, both within the club and in the outside world. 17 year old high school senior TeKeidra Masters did just that, all while balancing jobs, sports, community involvement, all while enduring teenage growing pains.
