There is an innovative after school program at Jackson Middle School in South Bend. Students learn kitchen skills, safety and the art of cooking and are able to take ingredients home to prepare meals for their families. Junior Chefs are paired with senior chef mentors and learn how to follow recipes, make nutrition meals and gain confidence in the kitchen as well as the social skills of eating dinner together.

Water Street Glassworks offers a two year program for teens. Fired Up! is an after school program in Benton Harbor where students learn to work in one of three studios – glassblowing, glass beadmaking & jewelry design or fused glass.

Gardening has been taught at Hollywood Elementary in Stevensville, Michigan for years. However in this day and age, educators at Hollywood Elementary find that it is even more vital to teach children where their food comes from. They also like to teach their students the importance of also taking care of the earth while doing so. They believe gardening is an essential life skill, and teaching students the basic sets them on the right path to career and health choices.

In This Segment
The Dismas House residents welcome college students in yearly, to help around the house. They not only help by building pantries and other miscellaneous things, but they also build life long friendships. This internship program helps the students gain volunteer experience, and also provides them and the residents, a different perspective. The purpose of the internship program is to give an alternative view than what they are used to, as well as establish the connection that they are all on similar life paths. Just trying to build a better life for themselves, and those around them.
