In A Lesson Before Dying, Ernest J. Gaines writes about justice, southern style. He wrote the book in 1993 and it reflects the African American experience and the oral tradition of his rural Louisiana childhood. Later his book was made into a movie featuring Cicely Tyson. Alfred Guillaume and host Gail Martin talk about the fictional town of Bayonne, the area where his grandparents lived and where Alfred spent his childhood summers. In A Lesson Before Dying, a white man had been killed during a robbery as well as the two of the robbers. An innocent black bystander was captured, and he would have to die. The man was named "Jefferson." This is his story.
