We are always in search of programs and initiatives in the name of education that are best practices and able to be replicated and adapted. This week on Education Counts we feature Goodwill's 2nd Chance at Work program, a local program for adults that is helping bridge the gap between unemployed and gainfully employed. Purdue Polytechnic High School South Bend is giving students hands-on learning and skills through STEM projects and curriculum. HerMichiana spotlights education, training and resources that are available to women in need. The Lilly Endowment is helping preserve youth programs at risk of shuttering during the pandemic by supplying funding so the programs can make the impact they were designed for.

Purdue Polytechnic High School
In order to better prepare students for college, Purdue University launched the Purdue Polytechnic High School. The program teaches students through hands-on and project based learning while also being STEM focused. The aim is for students to be ready to take on whatever the world throws at them.

Youth Program Resilience Fund
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in one way or another. With many schools closed, this left youth programs unsure of their own futures. To make sure these types of programs were able to keep going, the Lilly Endowment created a Youth Program Resilience Fund.

There is nothing wrong with wanting better for yourself, and the people at Goodwill Industries want to help you get there. They offer those who were formerly incarcerated, out of work, or under-employed with job opportunities, with the "2nd Chance At Work" program. Their mission is to "help us get and keep our lives on track."

With all of the options a search engine can provide, it can get overwhelming narrowing down the proper resources to help you accomplish tasks. HerMichiana is a resource that wants to take a load off of women in the Michiana area, by helping them pinpoint the right services for themselves and educating them on self-care. They offer classes, counseling and tons of training opportunities, like education of fertility, bills and budget management, continuing education, parenting support, and much more.

Free Laptop Incentive
For students of all ages, technology is becoming more important than ever for academic success. To make sure students are prepared, Ivy Tech South Bend-Elkhart created an incentive program where they will be giving away a free laptop computer to new or returning students for the fall.

Don't Quit Fitness Center
Academic health is important, but so is physical health. To make sure schools have the necessary equipment the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils created a grant. Ring Lardner Middle School became one of three schools in the state to receive one of these grants which resulted in the "Don't Quit Fitness Center" in Niles.

Goshen Health: Learning Healthy Habits During Lunch
Goshen Health wants Syracuse elementary students to know that yes, it does matter what you put into your brain, but also what you put into you stomach as well. They are teaching students how to develop healthy eating habits so that they can stay healthy. They also are teaching them about the benefits of staying active.

Grace Learning Center
The Grace Learning Center is an organization in Michigan City that strives, to help people overcome obstacles in life, one of the biggest being homelessness. They do this by teaching classes on cooking, Alcoholics Anonymous, mental health, anger management and they also provide a computer lab to help look for jobs as well. They believe that teaching their clients how to elevate their lives, has a far lasting impact on their individual lives, rather than quick fixes.

Summer Reading at Kewanna-Union Township Library
Many libraries have summer reading programs, however the public library in Kewanna, Indiana has their own spin on things. Not only are they providing children through teens great reading materials, they are also providing them with fun arts and crafts kits, to help their minds stay imaginative throughout the summer. Literacy is a passion of their workers, because they believe it is fundamental to their overall character development.

YouthBuild
YouthBuild provides skills training for low income and even out of school students. Through the rebuilding of houses, playgrounds and community centers, these students have the opportunity to earn their high school diploma or GED while learning construction trades skills. We head to Benton Harbor to see how a group rehabbed a house with these new skills.
