Reading proficiency is such a part of learning. This week Education Counts highlights literacy. We start by looking at a program that instills the love of reading called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. La Casa de Amistad is working to keep students reading at home and engaged in learning. Berrien RESA has a literacy coaching program for students in Berrien County. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is helping families build personal libraries without the barrier of cost.

For La Casa de Amistad, keeping their students reading is their main goal during our extended home stay. That's why they are depending on the internet to keep them on track with their literacy goals. The educators read books to the students virtually (in English and in Spanish), to maintain the connection with the kids, as well as prepare educational packets and resources for the parents to keep them focused while at home.
