Niles New Tech is teaching students to think through projects in teams. The Innovation Academy at Lincoln Junior High in Plymouth is teaching middle school students the hands on approach to learning. Colleges and universities across the country have been closed due to recent events. This can leave many high school students wondering what to do about the future and higher education. We explore what Lake Michigan College has put in place to help prospective students make those informed decisions.

Alternative Spring Break at Dismas House
The Dismas House residents welcome college students in yearly, to help around the house. They not only help by building pantries and other miscellaneous things, but they also build life long friendships. This internship program helps the students gain volunteer experience, and also provides them and the residents, a different perspective. The purpose of the internship program is to give an alternative view than what they are used to, as well as establish the connection that they are all on similar life paths. Just trying to build a better life for themselves, and those around them.

Reading proficiency is such a part of learning. This week Education Counts highlights literacy. We start by looking at a program that instills the love of reading called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. La Casa de Amistad is working to keep students reading at home and engaged in learning. Berrien RESA has a literacy coaching program for students in Berrien County. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is helping families build personal libraries without the barrier of cost.

We take a look and see how the South Bend Community School Corporation has made it possible to provide Wi-Fi access to students in all areas so they can continue learning even when school is closed.

Literacy at La Casa de Amistad
For La Casa de Amistad, keeping their students reading is their main goal during our extended home stay. That's why they are depending on the internet to keep them on track with their literacy goals. The educators read books to the students virtually (in English and in Spanish), to maintain the connection with the kids, as well as prepare educational packets and resources for the parents to keep them focused while at home.

Emotional learning is this week’s topic on Education Counts. We follow a trauma informed program at New Prairie schools. We learned with a group of Grissom Middle School students about leadership through a program called Five Star Fridays. Warsaw schools is teaching the whole child and addressing social and emotional as well as academic learning. South Bend Community School Corporation establish responsive classrooms to bridge the gap between academics and SEL. This highlight episode looks at social emotional learning through four school systems.

This week we created a themed episode featuring how nature is being used to teach. Future teachers at Indiana University South Bend learn at Prairie winds Nature Farm how to take the class outside the classroom and engage with nature. The Junior Indiana Master Naturalist Course helps homeschool students appreciate history and the great outdoors. Smaller kids get hands on nature in a pond study at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve. The Wild School at Luna Hill Farm lets students figure out solutions using raw materials found in nature. We also highlight online and on air educational resources for distance learning available for parents, students and teachers.
