Episode #515
It's the first episode of 2021 for Education Counts Michiana. We present four new segments about education. See how Trojan Heroes recognizes those who go above and beyond in Sturgis schools. Learn how trauma-informed strategies can help parents and students understand disruptive behavior in young children. Find out what job exploration programs are available for students with IEP's at the Career Academy in South Bend. See how iCivics can be implemented into the classroom for discussion around civics.
Featured in this episode:
-
iCivicsWith so much emphasis placed on math and reading these days, students are not learning what it means to be civilly engaged. iCivics is an online resource that provides games and even curriculum to teach students of all ages about being active citizens.
-
Trauma Informed StrategiesWhen young children act up, it doesn't mean they're misbehaved. Trauma-informed strategies are ways for teachers and even parents to understand and help a child who could actually be crying out for help.
-
Trojan HeroesTrojan Heroes is a program started to make sure that no school employee goes unnoticed for their efforts. It was put in place to offer a light at the end of a long tunnel, so that employees at Sturgis schools are just as encouraged to continue their good deeds, as they do for the students that they serve.
-
Special Education Transition Program at Career AcademyCareer Academy in South Bend wants to prepare their students for life after school, by teaching them the basics when it comes to job exploration. Their Special Education program is no different. Though students with IEPs may feel as though there aren't many paths to take, they want to instill hope in their students and their parents. They do this through encouragement and 1-to-1 guidance, as they show them that there are just as many options
